Beads and Bead Bracelets: A Gift That Meant So Much More

It seems evident that bead bracelets are a great gift to give to someone for any holiday or occasion. To me, it was a gift that meant infinitely more than just a bead bracelet with some beads on it. During an incredibly difficult time in my life, the bead bracelet symbolized so much more than just a simple piece of jewelry. To me, it was a bond to something intangible that meant so much more than just the superficial.

A few years ago my grandmother became seriously ill in just a matter of months. We were very close, and seeing her in so much pain was extremely upsetting to see. She always had a love of her beads and bead bracelets-she loved getting them from her grandchildren as a gift she could show off and chat about with her friends-and even in the hospital made it a point to wear her beads. As the time with her grew shorter, it became harder and tougher for me to get through the day.

At the very end, she was really weak but still able to communicate with us. She let us all know how she wanted her final preparations, and as much as I didn’t want to listen, she made all of her family aware that she wanted to be buried with her beads and bead bracelet. We knew how much it meant to her to have her wishes seen through, and I let her know that we would do that for her. The day she told me her final wishes, she passed away.

A few weeks after her passing, my grandfather came to me with a box and told me it was from my grandmother. I opened it and in it was my own bead bracelets adorned with a few of her favorite beads and a few new ones she had bought and chosen for me-with all of the heartache during the services, I hadn’t even noticed her bead bracelets had anything absent. It was a gift that instantly made me feel connected to her. My grandfather explained that she knew I would feel lost without her, and wanted something that would make me know that she was watching over me.

So this was how a gift was given to me that signified so much more than just jewelry; it was given knowing that I would need it at one of my worst times of my life. My grandmother knew that every time I looked at my beads and bead bracelets that I would be reminded of her watching over me. Though it was just a several items, the beads and bead bracelets helped to heal the pain I was feeling. It was certainly the best gift I ever gotten-so much more than simply beads or bead bracelets and jewelry.
